Fenor Duathlon
The Waterford Triathlon Club second duathlon in the 2010 series was held on the 24th of April on an overcast dry morning. Over 140 athletes took part in the race. The first 5k run, a tough one up "Heart-attack hill" takes in the views of Ballyscanlon lake and has a tough hill followed by the 20k cycle which went through Tramore and out the back road, towards Dunhill and was a bit of a rough cycle due the effects the bad weather over the winter has had on the roads and the strong wind which always seemed to be against you. The 2nd 3k run is was an out and back course and was relatively flat which meant quick times for all!
The race started out with a close battle between the men with most finishing run in under 20 mins, our own Kenny Curran was 1st into Transition but was closely followed by the other contenders.
Martin Kirwan (Waterford Triathlon Club) had a fantastic cycle and returned back in 1st place with the fastest bike split of the day, over 2mins ahead of his nearest competitor and the only person to break 30mins, Eddy O’Donoghue from Carrick Tri had moved up to 2nd place.
Martin Kirwan pulled away from his pursuers on the 2nd run to win in 58.28mins and set a new course record in the process with Eddy finishing 3rd in 61.13.
In the ladies race, Deirdre Keane had a good lead on her competitors after the 1st run and maintained that lead throughout claiming 1st place for the women with Siobhan Dunphy in 2nd and Jacinta Power (Waterford AC) in 3rd not far behind.
It was a great day for Carrick-on-Suir Tri Club with four men in the top 10 - Eddy O'Donoghue 3rd, Kenny Curran 6th, Gerard Conlon 9th and Philip O'Leary in 10th. A personal best for Christine Crowley who was 5th in the ladies category and Paddy O'Neill taking an amazing 10 minutes from his time last year. Well done to all.
The Club was well represented taking part were Eddie O’Donoghue, Kenny Curran, Gerard Conlan, Philip O’Leary, Rolf Power, Owen Byrne, Andy Mulligan, Martin Lyndon, Graham Loughman, Ger Foley, Bernard Connolly, Eoin O’Riordan, Ger Power, Mark O’Dwyer, Biran Clery, Tommy Browne, Christine Crowley and Patrick Neill.
Congratulations to Waterford Triathlon club for a great event and making the race possible and such a great success.

Crystal Clear Race Report
The 1st Crystal Clear Triathlon was held on Sat 18th April. The weather was glorious as everyone set up their bikes in transition and registered for the big event. As it was a pool swim there was quite a bit of adjusting to be done so that swim waves ran smoothly. After a firm race briefing (safety first!), the 1st wave made their way into the pool as people packed into the viewing area and watched through the windows. The swim was 500m long and the waves got faster with each one. Diarmaid Brennan (Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club) had the quickest swim at just 6mins 28sec.
On to the cycle, which was lonely enough at times as each wave had just 20-25 competitors. The course was out the Cork Road, with an extra km or two up the Outer Ring Road and back down again before continuing out the Cork Road. A turnabout after Kilmeaden and then back again, made it 20km. It was a hilly route but the faster cyclists were well able. Kevin Shelley had the fastest cycle at 27mins 14sec.
The run was short and sweet for most, around the 3km mark. Down the cork road towards Ballybeg, quick turnaround and back again. Davin Power had the quickest run time at just 10mins 38sec.
Well done to Shane Scadding (Waterford Triathlon Club) who took 1st position with a fantastic time of 48mins 1sec, Brianne Mulvihill (Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club) who won the ladies category outright at 58mins 14sec, Diarmaid Brennan Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club) won the Junior prize with an excellent time of 61mins 44sec and the quickest Relay team was Sean Colliers team (Wexford Triathlon Club). The 1st Crystal Clear Triathlon was held on Sat 18th April. Despite the foggy and icy conditions 149 competitors turned up to take part in the season opener run by Naas Triathlon Club at Punchestown racecourse in Kildare. This was a very competitive field as it was a qualifier for the World Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh later in the year.
The race start was 12:00. We had three members representing the club at the event Kenny Curran, Eddie O Donoghue and myself all hoping to qualify.
Ironman Nice - My Story by Donal Jacob
Most people when they go on holiday they tend to rest, the more energetic might have a swim or even a game of golf, so when we, as a family, decided to go to France, I decided to do an Ironman triathlon. An Ironman triathlon is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and then a full marathon i.e. 26 miles 385 yards to be percise. I had already completed the U.K. Ironman last September in a time of 14 hours 52 mins. so I thought to myself with a little more training, and maybe losing some weight, surely I could better that time.
There were 8 people altogether from Waterford heading to France for the race and congrats to all of them for completing the race in very respectable times but this is my story.
